Gum Arabic is High in Dietary Fibers
Gum Arabic |
Gum Arabi is a natural gum that was
originally made from the hardened sap of two species of the Acacia sensu lato
tree, Senegalia senegal and Vachellia seyal. It is also known by other names
such as gum sudani, acacia gum, Arabic gum, gum acacia, Senegal gum, and Indian
gum. Legally speaking, "Gum Arabi" does not denote a specific
botanical source. Commercial harvesting of the gum occurs mostly in Sudan and
the Sahel region, from Senegal to Somalia. At least as early as the ninth
century, the term "Gum Arabi" (al-samgh al-'arabi) was in use in the
Middle East. Gum Arabi originally arrived in Europe through Arabic ports, thus
keeping its name. In addition to its widespread use as a safe thickener,
emulsifier, and stabiliser in the food and pharmaceutical industries, Gum Arabic
is a rich source of dietary fibres.

It also has a variety of health
advantages that have been amply demonstrated through numerous in vitro and in
vivo studies. Gum Arabi ferments in the large intestine into a number of short
chain fatty acids rather than being broken down in the stomach. It is regarded
as a prebiotic that promotes the development and expansion of the advantageous
intestinal micro biota, and as a result, consuming it is linked to a variety of
advantageous health effects. Among these health advantages are. Kibbled gum can
be used to make powdered gum, but spray drying can also be used to make it.
This results in a premium, free-flowing powder that has even better solubility
properties than chewed gum.
To encourage water evaporation, the
gum is dissolved in filtered, contaminated water and sprayed into a hot air
stream using a gun. The powder is then screened to ensure particle size
uniformity. Gum acacia is a food stabiliser, emulsifier, or thickener that
improves food products' texture without compromising other aspects, like taste.
