Hearing Protection Devices Are Useful for Preventing Noise-Induced Hearing Loss and Tinnitus
Hearing Protection Devices (HPDs) protect workers from hazardous noise by reducing the amount of sound that reaches their ears. EHS must conduct noise measurements to determine if employees are overexposed to noise, identify the machine(s) or work process(es) contributing to this exposure and recommend proper HPDs. Hearing protection device are a crucial piece of equipment to help reduce noise reaching the wearer. They help to prevent noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) and tinnitus. They must be worn correctly to work effectively. These devices are designed to help attenuate sounds, as they can also reduce the audibility of important warning or communication signals. Therefore, they should only be used as a supplement to other means of reducing noise levels or communication methods.
Depending on the environment in which they are used, different types of Hearing Protection Devices may be required. Construction sites are one of the largest end-user categories for these products, as they experience high noise levels that negatively impact the ability to hear. In order to address this, manufacturers have developed a variety of earplugs and earmuffs that provide different levels of attenuation. Another common application of these devices is within the military. Soldiers are regularly exposed to impulse noise from transport vehicle engines and weapons. They often encounter sustained ambient noise from on-board ship engines or generators and during flight. Therefore, it is vital for soldiers to have access to effective hearing protection.
The global Hearing Protection Devices Market was valued at US$ 1,509.3 million in 2018 and is expected to witness a CAGR of 11.6% during the forecast period (2019 – 2027)
However, it is important that the correct HPDs are selected for each environment. In the military, it can be vital that they retain the ability to hear their team members, as well as other important information, such as directions and warnings. It is necessary to test the effectiveness of any HPDs before deploying them in the field. In order to protect the ears, it is important that users follow manufacturer’s instructions when inserting and wearing their devices. Incorrect insertion can lead to the loss of HPDs and a reduction in their efficacy. This can lead to increased tinnitus and/or hearing loss.
Many employees are hesitant to use due to a perceived stigma of being labeled as poor communicators, old or cognitively impaired if they wear them. Providing hands-on training on how to properly fit and use HPDs as well as demonstrating how to recognize over protection is critical. This is especially important for employees who already have impaired hearing and need to be able to hear alarms, instructions and warning signals. Amplifon S.p.A., has signed a definitive agreement for the acquisition of PJC Investments LLC., in December 2020. The acquisition will combine PJC’s 110 stores with the 59 corporate stores owned by Miracle-Ear under a single legal entity.
